36 Watt Standard Bright Light Sheet Installation Guide

Overview

Welcome to our guide on installing 36 Watt single color standard bright light sheet. Whether you're a DIY enthusiast or a professional, this guide provides the tools and products needed for installation. It covers selecting the right light sheets and power supplies and understanding connecting and wiring. Follow the National Electric Code (NEC) and local electrical codes for a safe setup. If you're new to electrical work, consult a licensed electrician. Here's the step-by-step process to design, connect, and mount your LED light sheets for a seamless installation. If you have any questions during your installation, please feel free to contact our Customer Support team at 888-503-1317 or via e-mail at [email protected].

Before You Begin: Product Warnings
  1. It is crucial to install any electrical product, including light sheets and their accessories, in accordance with the National Electric Code (NEC) and all other local building and local electrical codes at the project location. If you are unfamiliar with the NEC or your local codes, we recommend hiring a licensed electrician to complete the installation for you.
  2. Always consult your System Design and physical equipment to confirm that your light sheet voltage and the power supply voltages match.
  3. This product is suitable for environments with ambient temperatures between -40°F and 122°F. It is important that LED light sheets are not installed outside this range. Always make sure there is adequate airflow and available heatsink when installing. These are not rated for use outdoors or exposure to moisture.
  4. Light sheet Handling: Don't bend LED light sheets to a diameter of less than 1.5 inches. Don't fold or crease LED light sheets. Don't tightly bend LED light sheets on a horizontal plane. Don't power the light sheet while still in its package or in a stack. DO NOT put pressure on the light sheet Chip, Resistor, or Connectors. DO NOT directly cover light sheets without an air gap of 1.5 inches. DO NOT install a light sheet where LED chips are exposed to direct sunlight.
Planning Steps

1. Measure the Space:

Measure the space in which you are going to install the light sheets, measured in inches. You need both the width and the length of the space. The intended space should be a clean, flat, non-porous surface.

2. Determine the Number of Light Sheets:

Determine the number of light sheets you need by using their dimensions: 18-15/16" (480mm) long, 9-1/2" (240mm) wide, and 1/4" (6mm) thick. In our example, we calculated that 11 light sheets are required for our installation. We used graph paper to visualize how they would fit on the surface and how they would connect to the power supplies.

3. Power Requirements:

Once you know how many light sheets you need, calculate the total power required. Each light sheet is rated at 36 watts. Multiply the number of sheets by 36 to find the total wattage (e.g., 11 sheets x 36 watts = 396 watts). To determine the number of power supplies needed, multiply the total wattage by 1.25 (to account for 80% max load). In this case, 396 watts x 1.25 = 495 watts, so you would need at least two power supplies. For this example, we'll use two 300-watt power supplies.

4. Control Options:

If you don’t plan to dim the light sheet system, you’ll only need the power supply. However, if you want dimming capabilities, we recommend using DC low-voltage PWM dimming. In our example, we’re using a Casambi controller, which has a maximum load of 96 watts. To accommodate higher loads, PWM boosters can be added. Since the 300-watt power supplies have a load rating of 240 watts at 80%, you can divide 240 by 36 to determine how many light sheets each power supply can handle (approximately 6.66 light sheets per power supply).

In this example, we’ll connect 6 light sheets to one power supply and booster, and 5 light sheets to a second power supply with a second booster.

Installation Steps

1. Inspect the Product:

Check the product for any damage that may have occurred during shipping, including the jumper wires. If you notice any issues, contact aspectLED support immediately.

2. Prepare the Surface:

Clean the installation surface with a lint-free cloth, ensuring it is dry.

3. Mark Your Guide Line:

Use a straight edge, chalk line, or an existing line on the surface to mark a flat guide line to work from.

4. Position the First Light Sheet:

Place the first light sheet on the surface, aligning it with your marked guideline.

5. Apply the First Light Sheet:

Peel off the protective backing paper and firmly press the light sheet onto the surface.

6. IMPORTANT! Check the Polarity:

Before applying the next light sheet, check the polarity! All light sheets must be oriented in the same direction. To ensure they are correctly aligned, make sure the writing on each sheet faces the same way. Alternatively, check the solder pads: adjacent sheets should line up with + to + and – to –. If they don’t, the sheet is upside down and won’t light up.

7. Layout the Remaining Sheets:

Position the rest of the light sheets. This product can be easily modified to fit unique sizes. In our example, the light sheet is larger than needed, so we used sharp scissors to trim off the excess along the designated cut lines. Be careful not to cut off the light sheet feeder if it’s required for connecting the sheets. The feeders offer a quick-connect option. If removed, you’ll need to solder lead wires instead.

8. Connectors:

Each light sheet requires two feeders to connect it to the adjacent sheet or power source. The maximum run length is 6 sheets. Ensure the connectors are fully inserted. Do not exceed the maximum load for one power supply.

9. Connecting Power:

If you’re not dimming the sheets, you can power them directly from the power supply. Connect the grey wire to the red positive power supply wire and the white wire to the black negative power supply wire. These connections can be made using wire nuts, butt splices, Wagos, or solder with heat shrink tubing.

10. Covering the Light Sheets:

You can place other materials on top of the light sheets but ensure there’s a 1.5-inch air gap. Screws can be used inside the bullseye printed on the sheet. To maintain space, one technique is to use plastic standoffs over the bullseye to support a countertop above the light sheet.

Troubleshooting
Some light sheets light up and others don’t Check polarity and that the sheets are orientated correctly. Check the connecting wires or solder connections.
The light sheet at the end of the run is dimmer than the rest of the light sheets Make sure you did not exceed the maximum run length of 6 sheets and that both sets of connectors are used.
The power supply and/or wire is really hot Make sure you have not loaded the power supply past 80% of its listed load. Make sure there are no shorts or cross-connections in your wiring.
I installed the light sheets with incorrect orientation, and now the polarity is off Contact aspectLED support for advice specific to your situation.
Can I cut off the printed lines? No. If you do cut off the designated cut lines, you need to remove that section and cut back to the nearest line.
