Step 1: Measure, Measure, Measure
Begin by measuring the width of each stair tread. For example, if a stair is 4 feet wide, that exact measurement will be needed when cutting the channel and LED strip.
Next, measure the depth of the bullnose (the rounded edge of the stair). Building code requires a minimum of ¾ inch and a maximum of 1½ inches. Keep in mind that this dimension includes the aluminum channel. Since the channel adds approximately ⅜ inch, the combined overhang cannot exceed the 1½ inch maximum.
If the stair bullnose does not fall within these dimensions, it must be modified before installation. *Always confirm exact requirements with the AHJ in your area.
Step 2: Cut Channels to Size
Using the stair width measurements from Step 1, use a saw to cut each aluminum channel to the correct width for its stair tread. Confirm each cut piece fits properly before moving to installation.
Step 3: Plan Wiring Routes
Determine the wiring path from the power supply before installing the channels. The wiring must terminate inside the channel to connect with the LED strip.
Tips and Considerations:
- The lower cavity of the channel can be used for running wire.
- In some cases, it is easier to pre-drill wire pass-through holes before securing the channels.
- If wiring is routed through the stair structure, most codes require in-wall rated wiring.
Always review local code requirements before installing wire.
Step 4: Secure the Channels
Position the cut channel flush against the stair tread edge, ensuring the bullnose dimension remains compliant.
- Pre-drill all holes to avoid cracking or damaging the stair bullnose.
- Adhesive Tape may be used in addition to screws to ensure the channel sits firmly without movement.
- Install screws in the second-to-last groove (approximately 1 inch from the inside edge).
- Place screws 1 inch from each end and then approximately every 8 inches along the length of the channel.
- A countersink bit is recommended so that screw heads sit flush.
The channel must be fully seated, with no gaps or protrusions that could create a tripping hazard.
Step 5: Install and Connect the LED Strip
Once the channels are secured:
- Install the X-Series Strip Light into the vertical channel.
- Route wiring through the pre-drilled holes and make all necessary electrical connections.
- Test the LED strip to confirm proper operation before sealing the channel.
Step 6: Insert Silicone Lens
With the LEDs functioning correctly, place the silicone lens directly over the strip inside the channel. Press the lens into the channel evenly using your fingers until it sits flush. The silicone lens can be removed later if service or replacement of the LED strip is required.
Step 7: Final Verification
Add the end caps to the end of the channel, and then double check that the following is completed:
- All channels are firmly secured to the stair treads.
- Wiring is properly routed, protected, and compliant with local code.
- Silicone lenses are fully seated and flush, ensuring a finished, professional appearance.
