Puck Light Installation Guide
Overview
Puck lights are a simple and effective way to add task or accent lighting under cabinets, in closets, or in display areas. This Puck Light Installation Guide will walk you through everything you need to install surface-mounted puck lights, from the tools required to wiring and mounting.
- Drill with small bit (for pilot holes)
- Screwdriver (manual or powered)
- Wire stripper
- Wire connectors or soldering supplies (for hardwiring)
- Measuring tape
- Pencil or marker (for placement)
- Puck light(s) with pre-attached power cord
- Mounting screws (2 included)
- Optional extension cable
- 12 or 24 VDC power supply(s) (required, sold separately): Match the voltage of the puck light to choose the appropriate power supply. Puck lights are not compatible with MLV power supplies.
- Mounting hardware or cable management clips (optional, for clean wire runs)
- Puck Light with attached power cord
- 2 Mounting Screws
- Optional extension/angle adapter cable
- Surface-mount ring (detachable from light body)
Remember S.A.F.E.T.Y.
S: Shut off power.
A: Ask a licensed electrician if needed.
F: Follow NEC guidelines.
E: Equip yourself with proper PPE.
T: Treat the wires as live.
Y: You are responsible.
Keep in Mind:
- Puck lights are surface-mounted, so no recessed holes are required.
- Identify the power source and confirm if you'll be using 12V or 24V DC power.
- Determine your wiring method: Drill a hole to hide wires in the cabinet above or use the integrated wire notch to surface-mount the cable.
Step 1: Separate the light from the mounting ring.
- Gently twist or pull the puck light to separate the mounting ring from the light body.
- You'll notice two screw slots on the ring - these are used to mount it to the surface.
Step 2: Mount the ring.
- Choose the puck light location under the cabinet or shelf.
- Use a pencil to mark the mounting screw slots.
- Drill small pilot holes (if needed, recommended).
- Secure the mounting ring with 1 out of the 2 screws.
Step 3: Run the power cable.
You have two options:
- Hidden Wiring: Drill a hole in the cabinet to run the cable up and out of sight.
- Surface Wiring: Use the notch in the mounting ring to guide the power cord flat along the surface.
Once the power cable is run, secure the mounting ring with the 2nd screw.
Step 4: Reattach the puck light.
Once the ring is mounted:
- Align the light with the ring.
- Push or twist it back into place until secure.
Step 5: Connect to power.
- These lights are low voltage (12V or 24V DC). They cannot be plugged directly into a wall outlet.
- Use a compatible power supply. If you need help selecting one, check out our video on Choosing the Right Power Supply.
Wiring Options
Option A - Plug & Play:
If your setup uses the included extension connector, simply plug in the cable.
Option B - Hardwired Connection:
- Cut off the connector (if not needed).
- Strip both wires. The black wire with a dashed/marked line is negative (-) and the plain wire is positive (+).
- Use wire nuts or solder to connect to your power supply output.
Congratulations! The puck light is now installed!
- Always double-check your voltage compatibility: 12VDC or 24VDC.
- Use cable clips or adhesive guides to keep surface wires neat.
- Test the lights before final mounting for correct polarity and brightness.
- If daisy-chaining multiple puck lights, make sure your power supply has adequate wattage.
- Be sure the voltage drop is less than 3% per NEC guidelines.
