Mud in Channel Strip Light Kit Installation Guide

Overview

This Mud in Channel Strip Light Kit Installation Guide provides step by step instructions for planning, installing, and finishing your LED channel system in both new construction and retrofit applications. You will find a complete list of included components, required tools, safety reminders, layout and blocking guidance, wiring details, and final setup instructions.

Tools and Other Items Required
  • Measuring tape
  • Jewelers Flatblade screwdriver
  • Laser level (optional)

Drywall tools and materials needed:

  • Drywall saw (reciprocating saw preferred)
  • Drywall mud
  • Sheet rock screws
  • Drywall mesh or tape
  • Blocking if needed (Blocking is typically 2x4 or 2x6 lumber cut to fit between two studs or framing members to provide additional stability and a screw surface for the rock and the channel.)
  • Sheet rock sander
  • Painters tape
  • Putty knife
  • Level
Before You Begin

A: Ask a licensed electrician if needed.

F: Follow NEC guidelines.

E: Equip yourself with proper PPE.

T: Treat the wires as live.

Y: You are responsible.

Planning Steps
  • This kit supports up to 16 feet of illuminated channel.
  • Determine where you want to install the accent lighting.
  • This kit is designed for installation in 1/2" or 5/8" drywall.
  • New construction: Add blocking so the channel has a mechanical attachment point every 16 inches.
  • Retrofit installations: Whenever possible, position the channel so it can be mechanically fastened to framing every 16–24 inches.
  • If blocking is not available in a retrofit, it is strongly recommended to add blocking to reduce the risk of long‑term drywall cracking.
  • The kit includes 16 feet of in‑wall‑rated wire, sized to support the load while minimizing voltage drop.
  • If additional wire length is required, consult a voltage drop chart.
  • For longer runs, purchase an additional kit and repeat the installation process. Do not daisy‑chain kits.

Installation Steps

New Construction

  1. Layout and Blocking
    • Mark both sides of the intended aluminum channel location on the studs.
    • Ensure blocking or framing support is installed behind the channel at 16-inch intervals.

  1. Wire Routing
    • Plan and install a path for the in-wall rated wire from the power source and Casambi controller to the channel location.
    • Secure wiring according to local electrical code requirements.

  1. Drywall Installation
    • Install drywall using standard industry practices.
    • Cut the drywall opening to match the channel dimensions.

  1. Mount the Channel
    • Set the channel into the cutout.
    • Fasten the channel to blocking or framing using drywall screws.
    • Recommended screw spacing is every 8 inches.
    • Where no blocking is present, use 1/2" or 5/8" drywall screws and avoid overtightening. These screws should only grip the drywall.

  1. Mud and Finish
    • Apply joint compound over the channel flange.
    • Embed drywall tape into the compound and finish using standard drywall techniques until seamless.
    • Numerous drywall finishing tutorials are available online if needed.

  1. Final Surface Prep
    • Complete all drywall finishing and final paint before installing the LED strip.
    • Optional: Cover the channel opening with painter’s tape during finishing to keep it clean.

  1. Install LED Strip
    • Install the Dotless LED strip light.
    • Best practice: Peel the adhesive backing gradually as you press the strip into place, rather than removing it all at once.

  1. Electrical Connections
    • Bring the in-wall rated feeder wire into one end of the channel.
    • Make all electrical connections per the wiring diagram.

  1. Power and Casambi Setup
    • Restore power and confirm operation.
    • Configure the system using the Casambi app (iOS or Android) following the Casambi App Installation Guide.

Retrofit Installation

  1. Layout and Inspection
    • Identify the channel location and mark both sides of the cutout.
    • Be mindful of existing wiring, plumbing, or fasteners behind the drywall.

  1. Cut the Drywall
    • Cut the opening for the channel.
    • If existing drywall screws are encountered, back them out. Do not leave screws buried behind the channel.

  1. Blocking and Support
    • If no framing is present behind the channel, add blocking whenever possible.
    • Proper blocking greatly reduces the chance of future drywall cracking.
    • Where framing is available, fasten the channel securely using standard drywall screws. Wall installation graphic

  1. Wire Fishing
    • Fish the in-wall rated wire from the power source and Casambi controller to the channel location.
    • Connect the wire at the front end of the LED strip.

  1. Finish, LED Install, and Setup
    • Mud, tape, and finish the drywall as described above.
    • Install the LED strip, make final connections, restore power, and configure using the Casambi app.

Troubleshooting and Tips
  • For runs longer than 16 feet, use two separate power supplies and meet the LED runs in the middle for a continuous appearance (up to 32 feet visually).
  • Flickering or inconsistent light output is most often caused by poor connections. Recheck and remake all connections if issues occur.
  • Ensure a Casambi network is created before pairing lights, as outlined in the Casambi App Installation Guide.
  • If you are unsure about any part of the installation, hire a licensed electrician.
