What is LED Neon Flex? A Guide to LED Neon Lighting

LED neon flex is a flexible LED lighting product that creates a smooth, continuous, neon-like glow. It uses LEDs inside a diffusing housing to produce the appearance of traditional neon without fragile glass tubes or gas-filled lighting.

LED neon flex is commonly used for illuminated signs, architectural accents, decorative shapes, and feature lighting in commercial and residential spaces. Available in different colors, shapes, and control options, it offers a versatile way to add visual impact to a lighting design.

How Does LED Neon Flex Work?

LED neon flex combines LED technology with a translucent outer housing that diffuses the light. This creates a continuous illuminated appearance rather than the visible points of light often seen with standard LED strip lights.

Depending on the product, LED neon flex can offer:

  • Flexible designs: Create curves, outlines, and decorative shapes within the product's bending limits.
  • Diffused illumination: Achieve a neon-like glow with reduced visibility of individual LEDs.
  • Color options: Choose single-color, color changing, or addressable options.
  • Low-voltage operation: All of our neon products run on 24V DC.

Where Is LED Neon Flex Used?

LED neon flex works well in applications where the lighting itself is meant to be seen. Common uses include:

  • Signage and logos: Create illuminated lettering, branding, and custom shapes.
  • Restaurants, bars, and hotels: Add decorative lighting to feature walls, bar fronts, and entertainment spaces.
  • Architectural accents: Outline walls, ceilings, furniture, and other design elements.
  • Outdoor features: Highlight building exteriors and outdoor spaces with products rated for the installation environment.
  • Specialty applications: Use appropriately rated products for environments with specific temperature or moisture requirements, like our Sauna Neon Light.

Always check the product's environmental ratings and installation instructions before specifying it for outdoor or high-temperature applications.

LED Neon Flex vs. LED Strip Lights

What is the difference between LED neon flex and standard LED strip lights? The main difference is their appearance and typical use.

 Feature LED Neon Flex
LED Strip Lights
Light appearance Diffused, neon-like glow Direct LED output, with diffusion available through compatible channels, lenses, or products like our Dotless strip lights
Typical use Signs, outlines, decorative features Cove lighting, under-cabinet lighting, accent lighting
Design Flexible illuminated housing Flexible LED circuit board
Best for Visible lines of light Concealed lighting and adaptable linear lighting designs

LED neon flex is often the better choice when you want a visible, continuous line of light replicating traditional neon. LED strip lights are typically a better fit for concealed lighting, task lighting, and applications requiring a broader range of output options.

What Should You Consider When Choosing LED Neon Flex?

Before selecting LED neon flex, consider these key factors:

  • Bending direction: Our Side Bend Neon products bend horizontally, while our Top Bend bend vertically (including our Sauna neon light). Check the specified bending axis and minimum bend radius.
  • Color and controls: Determine whether you need a single color, color changing, dimming, or addressable effects.
  • Voltage and power: All of our neon products operate on 24 VDC and require a power supply. Use a power supply calculator to get the correct size power supply.
  • Environmental ratings: Some neon lighting, like our Sauna Neon Light, is rated for high temperatures and humidity. Verify the specs to determine if the product you want meets the environmental requirements of your project.
  • Mounting requirements: Neon requires special accessories, such as clips and/or channel. It cannot be used by itself or with other mounting equipment. Our Sauna Neon Light, on the other hand, has very strong adhesive on the back so it does not require mounting clips.

Not every neon flex product supports the same features, so review the specifications before planning your installation.
